Eddyville Nitro Chaos Wrap Up
Twenty five cars showed up at Edddyville to run down the 1/8 mile asphalt in search of a win light and a bunch of fun chasing the Victory Nostalgia Superstock race series.
As Greg Deaton headed up to Eddyville it occurred to him that he hadn't had to work on the car for quite some time. Well, you got to figure what happened after that, and it did. After checking out the car and ready to pull it back into the trailer a couple of converter bolts had had enough. Although a rather valiant effort was put in to correct it, something prevented the flex plate from making a complete turn and that was that.
Another valiant effort was put in by Dennis Spurgeon when a lifter went pear shaped. But, it was found out that that took care of the cam too, and he was unable to race.
Friday evening the weather was cloudy but not particularly hot and the Victory gang got in 3 time hits to tune in for the Saturday race. Once our trials were over most folks went up to watch the fuel cars qualify. During this qualifying, a new track record was made at 3.21 and you could tell it was a record hit by the sound of things even if you weren't watching. Once that was complete the rain started and it was a nice soaker to settle the dust for Saturday.
Saturday start was delayed by the time it was taking to dry the track with the overcast weather. Those clouds stayed almost all day and really tempered the weather and it was a great day to race. Due to the delay, all of the racers had to declare their index prior to the qual pass and that put everybody at the same disadvantage. We were able to get another hit later, but since that wasn't in the plan, the ladder was set from this first (let's guess) pass.
Points leader John Hamer showed everyone why he is number one in points by being number one qualifier by hitting the index right on the number and that was good enough for a bye on the 23 car ladder.
Round One
This writer took on Mike Doss in the “Headache” car (what a great name, eh?). It gave Mike a headache when the red bulb turned on. In frustration he tapped the steering wheel and managed to give himself a slight cut and ended up bleeding all over the time slip. He had to look at my copy to figure out what happened. His crew accused me of drawing blood, but I really had nothing to do with it.
Next up was Bob Haberburger against Dustin Christensen in a run of 66 Plymouth's. Dustin had just showed up Saturday morning with a new combo (remember he blew the engine and trans at Cedarfalls). Having no clue as to what to dial, he made a pretty good showing anyway with his guess index. But, Bob prevailed and on he goes to second round and Dustin signs up for the gamblers race.
Next pair down the track was Rosie Kossuth against Big Red and driven by Donnie Gains. Donnie was apparently making a sandwich and didn't notice the tree coming down, giving the win to Rosie.
Next pair newcomer Rick Ingram ran the T Bolt of David Fusner. David had some trouble this round and became a candidate for the gamblers race.
After that, Bob Lantero faced off against Fast Eddie Wheeldon in his real Hemi Dart. In a tight red light squeeze by Eddie, Bob pulled off the win.
Next pair down the track Jay Freihage pulled off a win over Clay Kossuth in a very tight race. With both racers with about the same light and just a squeeze at the finish line.
Victory racer Bob Westhoff and his black Ford managed a win over former champ Jim Hagenhoff, when Bob killed most all chances of Jim winning right at the tree with an 0.016 light.
Next, Derrick Strait and Large Marge put the hurt on Bill “Just in Time” Schlee when Bill broke out in just the smallest of margins at the finish line. And it was by a very very small margin, .0001.
Following the above racers, Shawn Johnston won over Dalton Mouseproof Bruemmer by probably the tightest race this round. Close only counts when you are closer, and Shawn was that this time.
Next pair, Curt Hoeft squeezed out Steve Gants in another close race. This began Curt's march toward the finals, and he was on a roll that wasn't going to be stopped.
Then Kevin Czasjouski won over BJ Bax when BJ broke out trying to stay ahead of Kevin. It was good to see BJ race with us again, but that doesn't assure a win. Kevin began his win streak that would take him to the runner up position.
Lastly, John Hamer runs his car down track and beats Bye to finish this round.
Round two
First pair down the track Jay Freihage puts down a perfect .0001 light on this writer and although I thought that was rather rude, I knew his win would hold up in court and I signed my self up for the gamblers race.
Next pair Curt Hoeft takes on Bobby West hoff and you have to know how this turned out since Curt won the race. Curt had a little better light and that never hurts when you are trying to win.
Next Bob Lantero takes out points leader John Hamer with a light that was way better, and that freezes Johns points accumulation for the day. John signs up for the gamblers, but remains number one in points after this race.
Next Rick Ingram puts a hurt on Bob Haberburger at the tree and that causes Bob to have to break out at the other end.
Shawn Johnston then takes out Derrick Strait in a tight race with both having pretty equal lights, and both pretty equal in running their index. But, only one goes on to the money round, and that was Shawn. Derrick signs up for the gamblers.
Last pair this round Kevin Czasjouski takes out Rosie Kossuth when Rosie goes red.
Round 3
Bob Lantero takes out Jay Freihage when Jay backs off of the perfect light from last round and at the same time, Bob kills the tree with a .017 light.
Next Curt Hoeft takes out Rick Ingram when Rick slows a little from his index and Curt runs really close to his. Once again, close counts when you are closer.
Last this round, Kevin Czasjouski takes on Shawn Johnston. Kevin comes out on top and Shawn stops earning points this race, but it puts him into second place in the race for the Championship.
Semi Final round
Bob Lantero looses to Kevin Czasjouski when Kevin has a slightly better light and that was that for Bob.
Curt Hoeft gets a ladder bye into the finals, and makes a good test pass here.
Final
We know that Curt wins this round when Kevin hits the tree just a little too hard and turns on the red bulb. But still a great race day for both of these racers in front of a huge crowd. This was an all Ford final which probably has never happened in a Victory NSS race before. It was neat to see this years newcomer win a race here as well.
Gamblers race
Sixteen racers signed their cars up for the gamblers race making the perfect field in perfect July weather in a perfect venue amougst all these fuel cars and huge crowd.
I just want to note here that I was taken out of the main race by a perfect light and the first round of the gamblers was the pretty much the same thing when Steve Gants took me out with a .001 light. Still had a great time here and I hope they have this event here next year as well.
In the final round here, Mouseproof Bruemmer took out Donnie Gains in a battle of Mopars to take home $200 for the win. When I was paying Donnie the $120 runner up money he said “You are going to pay me for having fun?” You got to like that attitude, and that is why we are here.
This was a great day and everybody got their chance to run in front of a crowd and with the great weather, it made for a great day. See you soon, stay safe.
