My wife and I took my roadrunner to a car show yesterday. While we were there a gentleman who races and was asking about my savoy ,and if I had it done yet, he is friends with doug duell so he knew I raced the car.We talked about this for a bit ,and he brought up towing around to different races, etc. Apparently a NSS racer from Mansfield ,Ohio-told me his name but I cant remember it- was towing to St Louis to race and was stopped by state patrol in Illinois. He was asked about the contents, he had a race car in trailer.Any "stickers" on car?-he was asked. No ,he was asked again then was asked to open the trailer to check the contents ,and there were 2 small stickers on car.He was sent on his way after being told to get weighed on the scale-no ticket. His "rig" is a plain 3/4 pickup, with a 24' enclosed--nothing special. Anyway about a week or 2 later he received a $750 ticket for the state of Illinois. They had his information from the traffic stop, and across the top of the ticket it said--"banks racing". They are apparently claiming he is a professional racer and didn't have the proper dot stickers, or paperwork which would be for commercial use. They told me he was trying to fight it ,but Ohio lawyer cant be used in Illinois, and he figured Illinois lawyer would be with the state. If he doesn't pay it is an additional $1000 fine and license suspension. He told the guy I was talking to he will not go to St Louis or any other track in that state again. This could impact several racers I know that live in this area. This was a long post but I would certainly like to know about this true or not,BEFORE I start towing into that state again. I have been through there many times and never had an issue. My setup is only a 1/2 ton with 24' enclosed.I am not and cannot afford a ticket every time I drive to a race, this could mean a change in my plans for racing. Ohio cannot do this to a private individual, especially with a non commercial vehicle. I guess I would like to know if Illinois has new laws in place for ANY truck/trailer ,and considers all of them commercial now.? Any thoughts, info on this would be handy, thanks.

Had Joliet penciled-in........just got erased.... Chicago politics at it's worst. It's infected every department across the state.

Are the tracks getting involved? You would thing they would be getting their local reps involved. When and if I get my car done it will certainly impact my decisions on what to tow with and where I go

after reading the story and comments over on dave's site I believe I will be making a big decision on racing here soon. if I stay with it I will most likely stay local ,and /or race -ohio/Indiana - maybe Michigan/Kentucky .I cant afford a lot of traveling, and sure cant afford a ticket just to get to a race.

Me too, Russ! Had Joliet penciled-in........just got erased.... Chicago politics at it's worst. It's infected every department across the state. You Guys are just jealous that your Ex-governors don't make YOUR License Plates!!! Since I was born in '53, I believe only 2 of our ex-governors Haven't done jail time . The rules are written confusing intentionally, you ask the DMV here and get various answers, and a lot are wrong due to interpretation. I think a fair amount of guys get in trouble over the GVW deal. While the combined weight can be up to 26,000 lbs, the trailer alone CANNOT be more than 10,000 GVW, and the pulling vehicle cannot be more than 16,000 GVW. ( except for R.V.'s and R.T.'s ) If you have the bigger axles on your trailer, check your GVW plate. My old trailer had axles over 10,000 combined, but the GVW plate was 10,000. If you tow with an R.V., the Trailer still cannot be over 10,000 GVW.. The plate weight limit is another area of trouble and a long story. This how I understand the rules, which doesn't mean anything, but so far so good and I've towed a fair distance over the last 18 years. One more thing, Ill. requires a safety inspection on trucks and trailers, depending on the GVW and or plating weight. My Dually gets inspected every 6 months , my old 26' box trailer with 10,000 lb. plates also got inspected. My L.Q. trailer is exempt, but the truck is not. I have no idea how the state looks at out of state vehicles. I also heard that the ruling on private vs. commercial . If your tax returns only claim winnings as ordinary income and no deductions lake a business takes, it's a hobby. Just like claiming horse bets. No, that doesn't mean carry your tax returns with you, but that could help in court. I'm not defending what they do here, But this could spread into other states too. By the way, I'm only referring to the private, not business registrations and to not have a CDL. If the GVW of your trailer or is plated over 10,000, CDL time.
