Do I need a two post switch or a four post? What is the correct way to wire the alternator? At Eddyville the tech guy when testing it had me run the motor to 3 grand and turned off the switch, but right before the motor was totally off he flipped it back on and created a power surge and fried my MSD box- alternator- fuel pump- my shift light and a few other fuses!! He made an expensive mistake for me and I don’t want it to happen again!! What is the right way?

So that's what happened! That tech guy should be liable for the damage! He should know better!

Glad I didn't make it to Eddyville, nothing worse then a bad Tech guy. Just an idea, would there be anyone in Victory that would want to go through the NHRA Tech schooling so we have our own Tech again? Sure miss Chris doing it. Sorry that had to happen to you Dick. Hope nobody else had that guy. Think I would send a bill for damages to Eddyville.

Thanks you guys, but I don’t think he meant to do that. I really need to know what the correct post is for the alternator?

Hello Dick, sorry to hear that guy wiped out all those parts on your car, holly S#$T . We have a 6AL box if you need one. We run a 2 post on off switch with our car. If the switch is wired correctly it'll work just fine. The trick is wiring it the correct way to kill everything. Took us a couple try's to get it right. Be more than happy to forward or call you if you'd like. I probably would've had to bail Pete out of jail or Julie bailing us both if it happened to us. Hey I know talk is cheep and takes money buy whiskey. Anyway you know were close enough if need anything. Best regards Bill.

quite simply the main alternator wire goes on the battery side of your cutoff switch on a 2wire... the only issue is that the battery and alternator are still connected and grounded, so in the case of a fire could potentially cause an issue ( ie main alt line still hot.) another way is the 4post 2 circuit switch with the alternator main line thru one set of poles. another way to do it is wire a relay to the cutoff that turns on the field wires of the alternator when the switch is on....only downside is relay draws power so you need to remember to turn off main cutoff when not in use....i vote for track managers to be nhra tech certified.....sorry could. not help myself

Bad morning? Even our hair dryer was fried today? Can’t blame that on the tech guy I guess? Both my hairs are still wet!!

As Damon said, the alt output has to go directly to the + battery. There can be no other connections on this wire, and it should be fuzed, or a circuit breaker (I've got a marine breaker on mine) right at the battery or inches from it. ein the same If yours currently has some other connection on that wire, that could well be the cause for your failure as when the switch was turned off the battery reference was removed from the circuit, and that can cause a "runaway".
For others, if your kill switch doesn't kill the engine as quickly as turning off the ignition, its not right. Also, this should be tested at like 1800, 2,000 rpm to ensure the alt is putting out over the required amount demanded by electrical users.

Jay, I will furnish the matches to start the fire !! By the way, the tech guy has only cost me $500 so far and my MSD box repair is not known yet? But, it is only money!! Wonder if I should tell the track to let him know not to do that again?

Dick, Don't want to add insult to injury, But by paying the entry fee, You actually paid to get your car damaged. Interesting how people ( besides the Gov't ) cost you $ , totally beyond your control.
