I received very sad news today. We lost one of the true Statesmen of the Mid-West Drag Racing Hobby. Clem Vehige, owner and operator of MAR Raceway in Wentzeville, Mo. for many years passed away Thursday. I always admired and appreciated Clem for the many opportunities and memories that he gave me. I probably made more than a thousand passes down his great 1/4 mile and always considered it my home track. One of my favorite memories is pictured here. At the First All Mopar Race at MAR in 1995, I was honored to have my car and my Buddy Jim Hagenhoff's on the Event Shirt. As if that wasn't enough, I was lucky enough to prevail over a tough field and win the Quick 16 Class. This was my largest victory at that time, winning $1,000 and a new pair of Indy Cylinder Heads. I was greeted in the Winner's Circle by Russ Flagle of Indy Cylinder Heads and an always smiling Clem Vehige. Clem not only always had a smile on his face, he always had a hand shake and a good word for everyone. He was never too busy to talk to one of his Racers. I was glad that we were able to Honor Clem at our Final Muscle Car Reunion Race at Gateway. He deserved to be recognized for his contribution to the Racing Community. We will certainly miss him, but we will always have wonderful memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mike Vehige, Steve Stahlschmidt and the entire Vehige Family on their loss. RIP Clem, I know you are smiling down on us. I plan on going to the Visitation after work Monday evening. If anyone in the Jefferson City area would like to car pool with me, let me know.
