Cordova Race wrap up
Victory Nostalgia super stock race gang showed up at the Nostalgia Nationals at Cordova raceway June 11 and 12.
Friday afternoon a few sprinklers fell and that closed out a chance at a couple of test hits for the group, but it cooled nicely for bench racing that evening.
Saturday was warm, well, maybe hot. But a breeze kept us reasonably comfortable. With a few qualifying hits we put up our indexes and tried our best to hit the numbers. Last weeks champ at Eddyville, John Hamer, came out on top to get the number one qualifier. This also gave him the bye in the first round on the pro ladder.
First round, first pair up was Mouseproof Dalton Bruemmer running Bob Haberburger. With almost identical lights it was Plymouth against Plymouth. But, Bob's Plymouth ran just a little too fast trying to stay ahead of Mouseproof and that gave the win to Dalton.
Next Shaun Johnston ran Jay Freihage's Hemi cuda. As Jay passed the tree that red device came on and said to jay, “Sign up for the gamblers race”. And Jay took that advice.
Then, Don Bruemmer takes out Dennis Spurgeon when Dennis's car picks up unexpectedly and Dennis breaks out. Although Dennis scrubbed a bunch at the finish, it was one of those deals where the car just wanted to go faster than Dennis wanted it too, and that is that. This puts both Bruemmers into the the second round, but only one will have any chance at going to third.
Next, this writer ran Bob Westhof in a race so tight neither knew who one until the time slip was read. (the sun was shining directly on the win lights making them invisible). Turns out luck was on my side, and Bobby was ready to sign up for the gamblers race.
Next in the staging lanes, Greg Deaton lined up with Bob Mosher's good looking Fairlane. Bob did get there first, but had to break out doing so and Greg moves on.
Then, the Ford T bolt driven by David Fuszner ran Kevin Czasjkouski's Fairlane in in a match that was over at the start when Kevin turned on that red bulb.
Then, Jim Hagenhoff in his smooth wheelie machine just cut down the tree and left no room for Mike Doss to take the strip. Mike signs up for gamblers.
Bob Lantero's orange machine took on the hemi powred red wagon of Kurt Tevalt. Kurt's car can wheelie with the best of 'em, but like the rest of us, he can reb bulb too, and Bob goes on while Kurt walks over to sign up for the gamblers race. Kurt ran dead on with a zero in this pass.
Next Jeff Blickensderfer takes on Derek Strait in “Large Marge”.With close lights it was close at the stripe, but only one gets to sign up for the gamblers, and that would be Derek.
John Hamer with the number one qualifier gets the bye.
Round two
This writer and David Fuszner line up and take off in a pair of red cars, Plymouth and Ford. David's red car takes the win in a double breakout in another race neither knew who won until time slip time.
Then, Bob Lantero tears up Greg Deaton's chance at winning with a good light, far superior to Greg's almost great light on the wrong side of green.
Next both Bruemmers line up against each other. Sometimes the ladder is not kind and this just works out that way. Both of their reaction times were within .004 of each other. Mouseproof goes on when Dad breaks out.
Shaun Johnston puts Jeff Blick in the “sign up to the gamblers race line” when Jeff breaks out.
Round Three
Dalton Mouseproof Bruemmer puts Jim Hagenhoff's 65 Plymouth on the trailer with his 65 Plymouth in a double breakout race. The weather had cooled at this point and it was getting hard to predict the cars performance.
Bob Lantero's orange Dart then hits the red T Bolt of Fuszner's hard when David's car REALLY picked up. Both broke out, but David's breakout took the loss handily.
Shaun Johnston got the bye into semi's.
Round four
Shaun took out Mouseproof at the starting line with his better light and Mouseproof broke out as well.
Bob Lantero takes the bye into the finals
Final
Good friends Bob and Shaun line up with an even second splitting their launch. With Shaun's light .010 better than Bob's, the extremely close race went to Shaun and that closed out the day for the Victory race gang.
