Eddyville Victory NSS race wrap up
31 Victory cars showed up to run the track at Eddyville for the Funny Car event June
4th and 5th. The weather was warm, but a nice breeze both days did a great job of cooling us off. Both evenings cooled down to just ideal conditions for bench racing.
Four new members joined the Victory gang here at Eddyville, and we all had two test hits Friday night to get us close to our index. Between those test hits, the Funny Car qualifying continued and they really put on a great show. I don't know if any funny car driver can hit the tree like Chris Schneider, and I think he did that every time.
Saturday we had one test hit before our final qualifying. This is when we had a tribute to our departed dear friend and fellow racer Tom Gaines. With the Victory Family at the starting line, son Donnie Gains took Tom's “Big Red” down the track in a pass to remember. And remember we will.
Next, with all the indexes declared, the final qualifier was run. With some breakage by Shelton and Meyer, 28 cars made the run. With some luck, this writer qualified number one, and with those passes, the ladder was set.
Mid afternoon, the Victory NSS gang was called for first round, and as usual, we were ready in the lanes and paired up in minutes. And, with some doing a last second tire check, the first pair of racers Dalton Bruemmer and Jim Hagenhoff staged in the beams. With a little better light, Mouseproof Dalton manged to put veteran racer Hagenhoff in line for the gamblers race later in the day.
Next pair; newcomer Derrick Strait in “Large Marge” took out Donnie Gains in Big Red with a hard to beat double zero two light. You never know what kind of light takes you out till you see the time slip, but when you see that, it puts that round in a new light as you review that round in your head.
Next Bill Schlee lined up against Dustin Christensen ready to race. But, once Dustin launched something went askew and he never made it off track under his own power. Not sure yet what happened, but Bill moves on.
Clay Kossuth in his factory light weight 63 Dodge took on another Victory veteran Dick Monaco in this round. Dick, pressing the tree to beat Clay, turned on that red device that tells you your round is done as you pass the tree. None of us like that, but we'll all do that again.
Haberberger in his Plymouth then took out Bob Westhoff in a race that was so close at the finish that only the computer could sort that out. But, no matter how close, only one move on to round 2.
Don Bruemmer and Mike Volkhart faced off with two of the faster cars in the Victory race next. Don caught Mike and crossed the line first to allow Mike to sign up for the gamblers race. This put both Bruemmers into the second round. I'm sure that felt good for both.
Mike Doss driving the “Headache” Plymouth managed to take out Rosie Kossuth in this race round. Rosie had had some trouble launching in time runs, and I suspect that played a part in this round as well.
John Hamer caught Greg Deaton watching him leave, which didn't leave Greg enough time to catch his own lights coming down (Greg's own words there). And with that, there was just no catching John even with Greg's hard charging new motor mods. But, this too allowed Greg to sign up for the gamblers race (which will pay off for him!).
Next, this writer challenged Fast Eddie Wheeldon in his real Hemi dart (yes, a real Hemi Dart races with us). Although I was sure I was dead late, I was able to take the stripe. But, upon getting the time slip, I had a Derrick Strait light (see above) and that assisted somewhat in me taking on Fast Eddie.
A red Thunder Bolt driven by David Fuszner then took on Jay Friehage in his Hemi Barracuda. Jay managed to cook his tires on the launch and that was the end to Jay's day of racing.
Shawn Johnston's Plymouth then took on the Dodge of Mike Goggin. Mike broke out trying to keep ahead of Shawn, and that ended Mike's day.
Bob Lantero then took on the blue Plymouth of James Goggin. Although James' car is certainly the prettiest blue car on the property that won't give you a win when Bob cuts a light twice as good as yours. Bob goes on, and I think this is when James had a beer.
Valerie Boelsen then took on Curt Hoeft in his FE powered Mercruy Comet. Valerie's killer light would have put most anybody on the trailer and this would be no exception here, and she goes on to round two.
Last pair down the track was the Mopars of Steve Gantz and Dennis Spurgeon. With almost exactly identical lights Dennis managed to cross the line ahead of Steve and put Steve in line to sign up for the gamblers race.
Round two
.Mike Doss came out on top in a round between him and Shawn Johnston, Shawn took the stripe, but by a little too much and this handed the win to Mike.
This writer took on Bill Schlee in his “Just in Time” Hemi in the second round pairing. Bill came close at the stripe, but as we know, close in drag racing is not a win and I got to go on to round three
Bob Haberberger with a 8.01 index then took on Bob Lantero with his 6.41 index. Something went pear shaped in Bob's run and with his car slowing, Haberberger took the stripe. Sometime also during this race, Haberberger also had the realization that his race car is slower than his daughters jr. dragster. But, after a pause, he moved on, and we all had to smile at that.
Then, Derrick Strait's “Large Marge” took out the Hemi powered Don Bruemmer Plymouth, when Don passed him hard, only to break out. Large Marge just has 'the look' and is a welcome addition to the Victory Family.
Spurgeon's Dartzilla then took on that red Thunderbolt of David Fuszner. With a heads up race, Dennis got out on David with a better light and stayed there for the win. That Ford is a really nice car, but that never assures a win in this game.
Clay Kossuth then put a hurt on Mouseproof Bruemmer and gave him a chance to sign up for the gamblers race. Mouseproof would have won if he could have scrubbed .0015 in ET, but that is how this racing stuff goes.
Last pair this round, John Hamer put a light on Valerie Boelson, kinda like she put on Hoeft in the first round. She also signed up for the gamblers race.
Round three
Dennis Spurgeon got a chanced to win over “Large Marge” driven by Derrick Strait and he did so. Derrick went just a little too fast trying to stay ahead of Dennis and Large Marge was parked for the day. This car has the “look” and its just got to be fun for Derrick.
Next Missouri boys, Hamer and Habergerger beat up on each other, with Hamer not red lighting like Bob. John had a light that would have been hard to beat anyway, but we never know that till time slip time.
Next Clay took out Mike Doss when Mike went too fast. Mike, after looking at the time slip, was surprised to find the car had picked up as much as it did, which, of course, is the reason for the breakout. Later on that same thing will happen to me.
This round I had a bye, which was the only bye in a 28 car ladder. This brings this round to a close and opens round 4, semi's.
Semi finals
With a call to the burn out box, John Hamer pulls his winning Barracuda into the box, but Clay just doesn't show. Clay's new starter failed and that put John on a bye and going into the finals. Clay had just put this starter in so it was new, but that doesn't prevent failure in this case. I did hear he got a pretty good deal on that starter though.
Dennis Spurgeon puts me on the trailer when my car picks up and I take too much stripe. Dennis could see I would take the stripe and played it cool and ran dead on with a 1 to take himself to the finals.
Final Round
Well, we know John Hamer wins over Dennis even though Dennis ran dead on again with a 7. But, this race needs to be won on both ends of the track and John had a better start than Dennis which allowed him the win.
This was a great race for Victory and a good time for all. The track was great and the staff treated us as good as it gets. Thanks Eddyville!!
Victory Gamblers Race
Fourteen cars signed and were ready to race at the beginning of (points race) round three. The ladder was set randomly but ended up pairing the father/son team Bruemmer against Bruemmer. We didn't like to see that, but that was the ladder. First round winners:
Mike Volkhart
Curt Hoeft
David Fuszner
Bob Westhof
Shawn Johnston
Greg Deaton
Second round winners, Curt, Shawn, Greg, and Bobby
Third round winners, Greg, and Shawn, with the Final going to Greg.
The track graciously provided the means to run this race with 100% payout to the final racers here.
Hope to see you all at Cordova, its coming up fast...
