Gateway Summer Speed Spectacular Race Review
26 cars showed up for the Victory NSS race at Gateway in rather warm summer weather that made you appreciate the shade. But with a constant breeze, we all managed to keep cool. We signed up a few new members, and on to the track action.
In qualification action, Randy Van Hook showed up only to hatch his motor like cracking an egg, and his week end was done after the first pass. Jim Hagenhoff turned his transmission into a lockup transmission. Not as in lock up converter, but just locked up/won't move kind of transmission. Pan removal reveled no easy fix, so it was on to spectating for Jim. Turns out this writer turned into a spectator after first round as well, but the spectating was particularly good.
First Round
First pair down the track and Dennis Spurgeon came out on top when Jimmy Brandon turned on the red bulb.
Next, John Hamer came out on top when Dustin Christensen turned on that darn red bulb as well.
Next Kurt Tevault and his red beauty over came Mike Doss's great .011 light to take the win when Mike broke out.
Ralph Dehne got by George Justice when, once again, the red bulb came on. By the way, next time you pass by the open hood on that 409 car, take a look at the aluminum inner fenders on that car, beautiful.
Then, this writers red bulb came on as I tried to take out Kevin Miller. Miller made use of a good test pass here and he was on not only on this pass, but every one after as well.
Shaun Johnston put a .009 light on Greg Deaton and made him break out as well to take the win at the stripe.
Dalton Bruemmer ran dead on, and I mean dead on his 11.50 dial to not only win over Bob Westhoff, but he also got the Duell Dead On award along with the best reaction time in quals award. This would not be Daltons last round win this week end either.
Next, Bob Lantero won over Don Bruemmer when Don broke out by .005 by taking over a half a car stripe on Bob's car. When asked about it, Don said, "well, it was a small car".
Next pair down the track was suppose to be Dick Monaco and Phil Rebello's car. Phil's crew were literally working on the car as he came down the staging lanes with the hood on the roof, trying to tune the bugs out. But, to no avail at a valiant effort, and Dick got a bye run when the burn out box became out of reach for Phil.
Bill Ping was on the ladder to run James Goggin, but Goggins car came apart in the last qualifying run. James got to about the 1000 foot mark when a rod decided to let loose, and with a hole in the block, the oil started coming out. Although the diaper caught a fair amount of oil, the rear tires came unglued and the ride got exciting for James. From the starting line it looked like he hit both walls, but luck was with him and although taking up the entire track no body damage occurred. Bill got the bye, and onto the next round.
Last pair to run was Jeff Blickensdofer and Rosie Kossuth. Rosie's car had noise at the top end of her qualifying pass, and she and Clay had to sit out the first round. Jeff goes on to round 2.
Round 2. We were given race priority and as such, rounds came up pretty quick once we started racing.
Kevin Miller had John Hamer in the first run of round two, and by now you know how that had to go for John. John and I are pretty good spectators though, and we got to watch the rest of the race from the starting line.
Next pair was Dick Monaco's 64 Ford against the red 64 Dodge of Kurt Tevault. Kurt's red car matched his red bulb as he wheelied past the tree to let Dick go onto the next round.
Dennis Spurgeon, making a habit of going rounds, took his A body Dodge to a win over Bill Ping's A body Dodge.
Next pair Ralph Dehne really put a light on Bob Lantero, but you already know Bob was in the finals, so..... Ralph is still fighting a launch bog, and if you have any ideas for that 409 car, let Ralph know, it cost him this round.
Next cars Dalton Bruemmer had a good light against Shaun Johnston's close, but no cigar double oh red light, and Dalton goes on to the next round.
Last pair this round was BJ Bax and Jeff Blickensdofer. BJ has been fighting gremlins in this car all week end long but got lucky when Jeff red lit by just a little. But in racing, a red light by a little is the same as a bunch, and BJ goes on. This would be a case when Jeff looks at his time slip and wants to kick something as BJ had trouble running the number.
Quarter Finals
Bob Lantero took out Dennis Spurgeon in another battle of the A bodies. A real tight race at the top end but only one winner.
Dalton, having a great day, gets over Dick Monaco when Dick turns on the red. Dalton goes on to the semis.
Kevin Miller gets the round over BJ Bax when BJ, knowing he has to cut a killer light since his ET is off, goes red. It was BJ's only shot, and he missed it by a smidgeon.
Semi's
Bob Lantero takes out Dalton Bruemmer when Dalton takes the stripe only to break out. Bob ran right on with a 4 to take the win.
Kevin Miller gets the ladder by into the finals.
Finals
Well, we all know how this turned out already. With the full Victory gang at the starting line to watch, in the heat, the final round was over pretty quick. When the red bulb, which does not match Bob's orange car, turned on. We all kind of groaned, not because Kevin won, but we know how the red bulbs feel. But, at this point, we are all Victory winners and we went on to take pictures and congratulate both winners in this day of racing.
As you have seen in the pictures, we had quite a crowd around those two guys, and it was a great end to a great week end of racing.
