Twenty cars showed up to race Victory NSS at Eddyville in some of the best weather we have had for racing.
Ralph Dehne showed up with his 409 running really well until the first run on Saturday, when he couldn't get reverse to back into his pit. But, with the pit re-arranged to pull straight in, we thought all good. But, in the final qualifier it was discovered that something major was wrong, and Ralph and Cindy's day was way too short.
Dick Monaco qualified number one, quoting a "Phil Cathyism" "my foot slipped", and this got him a bye with the 19 car ladder Leanna Hagenhoff filled out.
First round winners were:
Hoffman over Don Bruemmer who spun
Jim Hagenhoff over Jim Brandon
Dustin Christensen over Kaleb Bax (who drives one of the coolest looking cars in NSS)
Dan Beale over Bob Haberburger. Bob had just gotten his car together and was fighting new race car problems all through time trials.
Dennis Spurgeon over Matt Mothershed. Matt had changed a bunch of suspension stuff on the car over the winter and it looks like it responded well. But that doesn't ensure a win as we all know.
Greg Deaton over Jerry Bolton. Jerry's car is running great this first time out, but that also doesn't ensure a win.
Kevin Czajkowski over Jay Freihage
John Hamer over Dalton Bruemmer
Bobby Westhoff over BJ Bax. BJ was tuning his car through out the test sessions, but not enough to tune out Bob.
This brought us up to round 2. Round two winners:
Hoffman over Monaco. Both cars spun at the hit, but Hoffman's car spun less and he crossed first. This may be the first time these two cars raced each other since Hoffman joining in 2013.
Dustin Christensen took out Jim Hagenhoff despite Hagenhoff's smooth wheelies entertaining the crowd. I watched it on Bangshift and its always a show.
Dennis Spurgeon, on his way to the winner's circle took out Dan Beale.
Kevin Czajkowski took out new member Greg Deaton
John Hamer took out Bobby Westhoff. Both of these racers had close to identical, but mostly un-stellar lights in this round. But that made for a tight round race anyway with Hamer coming out just a little on top.
And that brought us to the third round. In the third round, we had the main race in the staging lanes, and right behind that we had 10 cars in the gamblers race. I will cover a little of the gamblers race later, below.
Third round winners:
Dustin Christensen over Tom Hoffman when Dustin played the top end far better than this writer.
John Hamer over Kevin Czajkowski. Both of these racers had nearly identical perfect lights. The problem was Kevin's light was on the wrong side of perfect where as John's was on the right side of perfect.
Dennis got a bye run in this round. He stated he had to look in the mirror to see what lane his opponent wanted, but I see he took the right lane.
This brought us to the semi finals. In this round Dennis was racing his step son Dustin. Dustin's car was built by Dennis, and Dennis has been schooling Dustin all along on how to drag race. In this round, the schooling continued and over came the student to go on to the final round.
John Hamer got the bye into the finals.
By now the sun was setting on an absolutely beautiful day with Hamer and Spurgeon pulling into the lanes. And a few seconds later when the score boards lit up it was for Dennis. Another great day of racing with the Victory NSS gang.
Gamblers race
In the later round, when Jay Freihage went to fire his hemi, something was radically wrong. Turned out an internal intake bolt got swallowed by number 8 cylinder, full autopsy not yet available.
So, with Don Bruemmer with a (ladder) bye, and with BJ Bax getting the Jay broke bye there was 4 cars left. Both Don and BJ agreed to run each other, eliminating a full round of bye runs.
With Don wining out over BJ Bax, the Dan Beale/Don Bruemmer final was set up. Dan had been running the number all day, and this round was no exception. With Dan coming out on top the Victory NSS race day was done.
This was really a great show for all with the gassers, Ozark Super Shifters, and 26 funny cars to entertain us Victory racers when we weren't busy with our stuff. The days were warm, and the nights cool, it made for a very enjoyable race. Hope we can do this again next year.
