So, my engine starts to go pear shaped at about 800 ft mark with a miss that sounded like I was running out of gas. A micro second later I have a vibration and I shut the key off. But, at that RPM it doesn't stop for a while and it is vibrating like 4 rods are coming out of it before it gets real quiet. I go through the traps at 104 and I know I am smoking and I stop as quickly as I can at the side of the track. I get my safety stuff off and jump out of the car and look under it, and nothing. I have forgot about the diaper at this point. I think, what the heck, but with that severe vibration I know something is REALLY wrong. I look behind the car, and nothing. No oil streak, nothing. Then, when I look under the car again the diaper has started to leak as it filled with the water from the block. Number 3 and 4 rods have come out. Under the hood I look, and I see the hole in the block, and a couple of rods there inside.
At home here, I started taking things apart and in the diaper are numerous (sharp) parts of the block, and the small end of a rod. So I begin to assess the engine damage. But gang, what I wasn't assessing, was damage to the car, the tires, nor me. The diaper kept parts and oil off the track, until I stopped. When the car was on the roll back, there was an 18 inch circle of water and oil. That is it.
Please keep in mind gang, that yeah, I had a diaper. But, like the seat belt and helmet, I was never going to need them, because stuff like that doesn't happen to me. That is all for somebody else. That diaper probably saved me from needing my belts and helmet. Oh boy, am I a believer!
Dennis Spurgen basically had the SAME thing happen to him at Indy. Same results. Before I had my problem, in talking with Dennis he said over and over again, no leakage until he was stopped. He said it so many times that I thought it odd. Odd until, well..... Now I have been saying it over and over.
But, its not going to happen to me.
